BHUTAN CYCLING TOUR ITINERARY

13 Days / 12 Nights Itinerary

  • Arrive at Paro International Airport.

  • Meet your tour leader and cycle support crew.

  • Transfer to hotel and unpack your bikes (if bringing your own) or fit your rental.

  • Briefing session on road safety, route expectations, and acclimatization.

  • Optional short ride around Paro to warm up.

  • Overnight in Paro.

Cycling Distance: Optional 10 km

  • Light ride to Drukgyel Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang, two of Bhutan’s iconic cultural sites.

  • Capture views of Mount Jomolhari on clear days.

  • Lunch in Paro town and visit National Museum.

  • Return ride with optional off-road detour through pine forests.

  • Overnight in Paro.

Cycling Distance: 25–30 km

  • Begin ride from Paro toward Thimphu.

  • Ride along the Pa Chu river, passing terraced fields and village settlements.

  • Depending on fitness levels, complete 30–50 km then transfer remaining distance by support vehicle.

  • Explore Thimphu in the evening.

  • Overnight in Thimphu.

Cycling Distance: 40–50 km

  • Early start for ride to Dochula Pass (3,100m)—a tough yet rewarding climb.

  • Rest at the 108 stupas and enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas.

  • Descend to Lamai Gompa and regroup with support vehicle.

  • Return to Thimphu for dinner and rest.

  • Overnight in Thimphu.

Cycling Distance: 45 km uphill / 20 km downhill

  • Transfer to Dochula Pass, then begin ride downhill into subtropical Punakha Valley.

  • Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple) and Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s most picturesque fortress.

  • Optional ride to suspension bridge and rice paddies.

  • Overnight in Punakha.

Cycling Distance: 60 km (mostly downhill)

  • Morning transfer partway, then ride into the serene Phobjikha Valley.

  • Cross through rhododendron forests and open meadows.

  • Visit Gangtey Monastery and ride the Gangtey Nature Trail.

  • Overnight in Gangtey eco-lodge.

Cycling Distance: 35–40 km

  • Early transfer to base of Pele La Pass.

  • Ride over the pass (3,300m) with stops for mountain photography.

  • Descend to Trongsa, the gateway to central Bhutan.

  • Visit Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral seat of Bhutan’s royal family.

  • Overnight in Trongsa.

Cycling Distance: 40–50 km

  • Ride along winding mountain roads with beautiful pine forests and yak herders.

  • Stop for lunch at Yutong La Pass (3,425m).

  • Arrive in Jakar, spiritual heart of Bhutan.

  • Visit Jambay Lhakhang or Kurje Monastery.

  • Overnight in Bumthang.

Cycling Distance: 60–70 km

  • Ride through the peaceful Chamkhar Valley.

  • Optional longer ride to Ura Valley, known for its quaint stone houses.

  • Visit Ura Lhakhang, interact with locals, and photograph traditional weaving.

  • Return to Bumthang for overnight.

Cycling Distance: 30–60 km (flexible route)

  • Long transfer west with breaks for rest and photos.

  • Short recovery ride near Wangdue town, passing rice paddies and riverside.

  • Relax and enjoy dinner at hotel.

  • Overnight in Wangdue.

Cycling Distance: Optional 20 km

  • Morning ride to scenic spots near Chuzom.

  • Transfer to Chele La Pass (3,988m), Bhutan’s highest motorable road.

  • Ride descent into Haa Valley (optional).

  • Transfer to Paro for overnight.

Cycling Distance: 40 km (optional descent)

  • Rest your wheels today and lace up your hiking boots.

  • Hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest).

  • Spend time at the monastery for meditation and photography.

  • Return for farewell dinner and celebration.

  • Optional hot stone bath in the evening.

  • Overnight in Paro.

  • Transfer to Paro Airport for your flight home.
